Visiting Rainbow City at Community Park With Kids
Rainbow City is Davis’s landmark community-built wooden playground, tucked into the northeast corner of Community Park next to the Davis Art Center. The original was a beloved volunteer-built structure; it closed in late 2014 over an arsenic issue with the old pressure-treated wood and was rebuilt by the community and reopened a few years later, so what you visit today is the newer, safer version. It’s free, open daily, and squarely a destination playground rather than a quick pit stop.
What parents say: Across public reviews the recurring themes are consistent: families love the castle-and-pirate-ship theme, the swings, and the moving bridges and platforms — but several parents note it skews toward kids who can already climb and handle monkey bars rather than the youngest toddlers. Picnic areas get mentioned often as a plus for making a half-day of it. (Yelp rating 4.6/5 from 8 reviews)
Tips From Local Families
- •Best suited to roughly ages 3–12; confident climbers get the most out of it, younger toddlers will want a hand on the bridges.
- •There are picnic areas (including a large shaded group arbor on the northeast side) — pack a lunch and make it a half-day.
- •It’s right in central Davis with bike parking, so it works as a weekday afternoon stop, not just a weekend trip.
- •Wooden structures and sand get hot on triple-digit Davis afternoons — mornings are the easier call in summer.
