The library saved us. It's spacious, wonderfully air-conditioned, and there are usually kid-area activities or story times on the calendar. If you need a quiet reset, this is it.
Food nearby: Downtown Davis has plenty of kid-friendly options. Paesanos has a proper kids' menu with pasta and pizza. The factory tour is indoors, sugary, and fun; weekdays are best to see machines running. The on-site Factory Café has a kids' menu, sandwiches, salads—and very on-brand, bean-shaped burgers. Plan your tour around a café stop and you won't have to get back into the heat.
California State Railroad Museum (Old Sacramento)
If your kid loves trains, this is pure joy—cool galleries downstairs and a beloved play area with train tables upstairs. Afterward, stay in Old Sac's shade and grab a meal at Bear & Crown, which is just a short walk away. Their menu has plenty of hearty options, and they're used to families coming in with little ones after a museum visit.

When you need more space but not a long drive, this soft-play setup in Natomas hits the sweet spot—cool, padded, and toddler-scaled.
Food within a few minutes: Panera Bread on Del Paso Rd has a dedicated kids' section (PB&J, mac & cheese, grilled cheese), and Chipotle nearby offers kid-sized quesadillas and bowls.
Wacky Tacky (Rancho Cordova / Roseville)
Bigger play structures and carnival-energy indoors. Rancho Cordova is the closer bet from Davis; check hours before you go.
Food nearby: Simple fast-casual works best—In-N-Out and pizza along Folsom Blvd are just a few minutes away.
Final Thoughts
Start local at the Davis Public Library or The Kids Club in Woodland when you just need relief. If you want to make it a bigger outing, the Jelly Belly Factory and Railroad Museum both combine cool indoor fun with kid-friendly eats right next door. With a few of these in your back pocket, even a 104°F day without AC becomes survivable.
